Rep. Jody Richards

Representative for the 20th District and Speaker Pro Temp

Jody Richards began his career as a teacher at Western Kentucky University. He has been a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives since 1975, and is one of the longest serving members of Kentucky government. He was the longest serving Speaker of the House in Kentucky history, from 1995 until 2009.

His efforts in the House of Representatives have centered around a focus on education, which, prior to Mr. Richards presence in the House, had been notoriously underfunded and given little attention. He has been the driving force behind numerous bills over the past four decades to give Kentucky’s youth a better education. These efforts had culminated when the community came together to present Jody Richards Elementary in 2012 to show their appreciation for his lifelong commitment to their children’s future.

Representative Richards is the owner of Superior Books, Inc. in Bowling Green. He is a graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, and later went on to complete his Masters at the University of Missouri. He and his wife Neva have one son, Roger.
